In-No-Plastic’s Research Presented at the International Conference on Microplastic Pollution in the Mediterranean

In-No-Plastic’s Research Presented at the International Conference on Microplastic Pollution in the Mediterranean

From 25th to 28th September 2022, representatives from the In-No-Plastic consortium were invited to Naples, Italy, to present the project’s results and findings in terms of microplastic pollution. The conference gathered members of the scientific and industrial communities and relevant stakeholders, allowing them to share any progress, highlight any new technologies and discuss effective solutions in the fight against microplastic pollution, specifically in the Mediterranean area.

Representing the In-No-Plastic project were Dr. Davide Poletto, Executive Director of Venice Lagoon Plastic Free, and Marius Sandru of Sintef’s Department of Biotechnology and Nanomedicine.

International Conference on Microplastic Pollution in the Mediterranean

Beginning Sunday 25th September and concluding on Wednesday 28th September, the International Conference on Microplastic Pollution was held this year in Naples, following the success of its previous editions. This year, the topics covered by the conference were extended across a range of fields, including the recovery and recycling of marine plastics, microplastics in the human food chain, socio-economic and environmental impact of microplastics, and more.

In-No-Plastic Presenting our Technologies and Findings

In-No-Plastic’s first presentation at the International Conference on Microplastic Pollution in the Mediterranean took place within the morning session of Tuesday 27th September. Here, Dr. Davide Poletto of Venice Lagoon Plastic Free took to the podium to present In-No-Plastic’s research on the detection and characterisation of micro- and nano-plastic pollutants using the case study of the Adriatic Sea. This research was carried out in conjunction with the Politehnica University of Bucharest (UPB) and with Montani Technical and Technological Institute in Fermo, Italy.

During the afternoon session of that same day, Marius Sandru of Sintef presented the In-No-Plastic project’s current results on the removal of nano- and microplastics from a marine environment using biodegradable flocculants. These flocculants aim to increase the size of the microplastics present in a body of water in order to more easily remove them.
