Venice Lagoon Plastic Free Attends the UN Oceans Conference

At the end of last month, project partners Venice Lagoon Plastic Free were invited to attend this year’s edition of the UN Oceans Conference, which took place in the Lisbon area of Portugal. The conference provided an opportunity for a range of decision-makers, stakeholders, industry experts, researchers, associations and more to come together in a bid to conserve the world’s oceans. The UN Oceans Conference was deemed a success, and presented and shared innovative solutions and technologies in the fight for #OneSustainableOcean.

The UN Oceans Conference

Co-hosted by the governments of Kenya and Portugal, this year’s UN Oceans Conference was entitled “Scaling up Ocean Action Based on Science and Innovation for the Implementation of Goal 14: Stocktaking, Partnerships and Solutions”. It aimed to address a number of the deep-rooted problems relating to ocean conservation and sustainability, hoping to mobilise action at an international level.

Partners Venice Lagoon Plastic Free were invited to present and discuss their marine litter app, developed as part of In-No-Plastic’s H2020 sister project MAELSTROM. The app allows industry professionals and knowledgeable associations to monitor and register the type, size, and frequency of marine litter – mainly plastic – found within a 100m area, and fully complies with international standards. It boasts functionalities which support clean-up and marine litter tracking for industrial treatment, and has been used at multiple clean-up and monitoring sessions in and around Venice and Portugal. The app has proven successful in allowing the identification of various types of marine litter.

At the conference, In-No-Plastic and MAELSTROM also submitted a policy brief on suggested regulatory changes which would render marine litter removal and reintroduction into the economy viable on a large scale. More information on the submission of this policy will follow over the next few weeks.
